This
is my 14th year teaching at PHS. I teach Physics, AP Physics and 9th
Grade Global Science. The students in my last 4 AP Physics classes
have passed the National AP Exam at a 77.8% pass rate (National
Average pass rate is approximately 59%), with no class
achieving an average pass rate of less than 70%. For the last 4
years, I have been an active member of the State of Washington
Science Assessment Leadership Team (SALT) that writes, scores,
evaluates each and ever question that goes on the WASL High School
Science Exam.
Prior to teaching, I was in the Navy.
I was a Naval Flight Officer (over 5,000 hrs in the air), a Nuclear
Weapons Officer aboard an aircraft carrier and I was Aviation
Operations Officer in charge of an Air Field in the Indian Ocean
about the time of Desert Storm where both Navy and Air Force
Aircraft based their operations from.
I am
married (Judy) and have 2 kids (Christen & Hans II).

This is my first year at PHS and I am very excited to be here! I am
teaching general biology and general chemistry this year, my two
favorite classes to teach.
I enjoy the outdoors; especially fly fishing, backpacking, and
kayaking. I also play a lot of music. I play bagpipes and am also a
piping instructor. Yes, I wear a kilt. Other than bagpipes, I play
banjo, guitar, and have even been known to attempt a tune or two on
my fiddle.
I recent published my first, and probably only, paper in a
scientific journal (Canadian Journal of Forest Research), based on
the research I complete for my thesis.

I
enjoy biology and I am passionate about teaching biology. Biology is
one of those fields of study that enables an individual the ability
to discover the patterns of life. Biology gives you the foundation
and applications to better understand our influences on the world
and how the world influences us.
Before teaching at Peninsula High School for the last six years, I
taught and developed the first International Baccalaureate Biology
Program in Western United States (14 years) and I taught a Pre IB
program in Western Africa (2 years). I have also worked in resource
management for the United States Forest Service, as a research
biologist for United States National Park Service and as a Research
Associate for Oregon State University's Cooperative Research Unit.
I also performed Molecular Biology research at Pacific Lutheran
University, as well as performing and publishing research on
the California Gray Whale in Alaska and Mexico. My graduate degree
research was in environmental toxicology and I have an Undergraduate
Degree in Zoology and a Masters Degree in Biology.
Teaching at PHS has been especially pleasurable because I have been
able to watch my four children (Melissa, Jimmy, Amy and Lindsey),
and their childhood friends, enter and graduate from Peninsula High
School. My wife, Sheryl also teaches for the Peninsula School
District. The overwhelming sense of community is invaluable to me.
There is nothing more enjoyable than helping students perform
research and seeing my students outside of school in Gig Harbor, and
sometimes while traveling in Maui. I am also fortunate to be working
with the best administrative team that I have experienced while
teaching.

| Most weekends you'll find my dog Hannah and I at the beach looking for waves or climbing mountains on skis. I love to travel locally and around the world to play in the waves and snow. I am a Washington native, and I attended Western Washington University, go Vikes! After college, I worked researching the effects of fire on forest ecosystems, doing controlled burns, and putting out lightning fires in our National Parks. I currently live near Stadium High School in Tacoma. All of these adventures can't compare to the adventures packed into one single day teaching. I look forward to creating fantastic memories at PHS!

My interests are anything science and art related, biology,
medicine,
chemistry, botany, ceramics.
I am so excited to be teaching Forensic
Science 1 & 2 after training at the Henry Lee Institute in
Connecticut during the summer. When I got back I was able to set up
