The SPSL/WCC state and district golf tournament was conducted at
Chambers Bay today (10/23) and the week before at Gold Mountain.
Despite last weeks less than stellar team performance, the boys were
the only team to get all 6 players to the tournament at Chambers
Bay. On a beautiful October day the boys did it again with all 6
completely dominating the other remaining teams by having all 6 boys
either make it directly to state (3) or to districts (3). Senior
captain Chris Bean led the charge by following his solid 74
last week with a 75 to take 6th place. Kevin Keiter finished
8th with a superb 73 to go with his 78 and capture 8th place. Not
to be outdone, junior Joey McNelis carded a one under par 71
to move from a tie for 27th to 10th place to earn the third spot at
state. All three players will be making their third trip to state
in May at Meadow Springs CC in the Tri-Cities. The remaining three
members of the team will play at Fort Lewis on Monday May 18 in the
West Central District tournament. Christian Letts came back
from a poor showing at Gold Mountain (85) with a 10 shot reduction
to 75 and good for a tie for 13th. Freshman Devin Findlay
(only 3 freshman were in the field) followed his 83 at Gold Mountain
with a solid 81 effort to finish 22nd and senior Loren Johnson
shot 85 to get into a 4 player playoff for the last three district
spots. Showing the calm of a seasoned veteran, Loren calmly parred
the first hole to take 25th place. Perhaps the best part of the
boys story is how they played the back nine as a group. Earlier
this year the same group combined to score 100 points or 8 over par
as a 6 man team. They beat this score at Chambers Bay with McNelis
and Keiter firing one-under par 35, Bean and Letts matching par at
36, Findlay coming back with a one over 37 after a poor front nine
and Johnson firing a 40 for a point total of 105. With 108 being
even par the TEAM was on fire on the back nine!
Not to be outdone, the three girl players also all qualified either
for state or districts. With only two players in the field scoring
lower than their Gold Mountain scores, Chambers Bay was a brutally
tough test for the girls. Freshman Rachel Lewis (the only
freshman in the field) finished tied for 4th and earned a direct
spot at state in the spring. Rachel is only the second freshman
girl in school history to accomplish this feat as a freshman. The
other player was some girl named Gilhuly and she went on to win
state as a senior! Rachel may win it more than once! The other two
Peninsula lady players qualified for the WCD tournament at Fort
Lewis. Junior Anna Heacox finished 11th while senior captain
Katie Stavig finished right behind in 12th. With nearly 7
months of practice before state I expect both girls and all three
boys to be enjoying the Tri-Cities sunshine in late May.
I can not tell you how proud Tony and I were of these 9 players.
Teams that we lost to earlier in the year were steamrolled by the
boys and our girls were only topped by the defending state champions
in the number of players sent to state or districts. Let all the
golfers know that they represented "Go Seahawks" very well.
