Great Opportunity - Collaboration For Student Achievement
June 9, 2008
This month, the Peninsula School Board approved the contract between the district and the teachers’ association. One very important feature of this contract provides staff a one-hour late start every Wednesday morning for the purpose of school improvement planning and collaboration. Next year, on Wednesdays, school will start for high school students at 8:30 am. A letter from our Superintendent explaining more about the decision and the plan will be sent home this week.
This feature of the contract is applauded by both administration and teaching staff. This year, all district schools entered into a comprehensive School Improvement Planning process. This additional time on Wednesdays will give us a chance to put energy into developing and implementing strategies to accomplish our goals that are related to student achievement and school climate.
Our commitment to you is to make productive use of the time. We will report what we are doing and how it is benefiting students. We appreciate the efforts you will need to make to accommodate this change in your schedule. We are confident that the time will be a valuable investment in increased student learning for all of our students.
Peninsula Reads! 2008 – Books of Choice!
June 2, 2008
Lynda Richards
The English Department at Peninsula High School is proud to announce their latest endeavor to encourage lifelong reading – Peninsula Reads! 2008 will be a variety of book clubs hosted by Peninsula High School staff members. A number of staff members have chosen books they are interested in reading over the summer; students have the opportunity to choose which book they would like to read and share in a group discussion either via internet, or in the setting of a local book store or coffee shop. The variety is as varied as staff members leading groups. If students don’t see a title of a book they are interested in reading, they can ask a staff member to be the facilitator and make their own group.
Our goal is to see students and staff alike engage in interesting conversations about topics they have in common, building on our mission statement of: “Continuous learning through rigor, relevance and relationships.” Join us!

Story
Samantha
Cook Senior, Samantha Cook is a hard working focused art student at PHS. “Even
though ideas come easily to her, she pushes herself to
expand on the basic concepts, says her art teacher,” Karen
Peck. Samantha spent 5 days of her summer at the Art
Institute of Portland’s Summer Studio. She explored her
interest in design workshop, where she learned about
advertising, design management, graphic design, web design
and interactive media. Through this summer experience, Sam
has gained skills, and a true understanding of what it takes
to be a graphic designer. Sam enjoys her art classes and
teaching swimming at the YMCA. She is a diver on our PHS
girls’ swim and dive team. Her favorite class is silkscreen.
She will be taking even more art classes in her senior year.
It looks very likely that Samantha will be heading to her
school of choice at the Art Institute of Portland in the
fall of 2009.
Teacher of the Week
Bob
Myhre
Bob Myhre is a man of integrity and wisdom. Our PHS students have been fortunate to have him making history come alive for them these past nine years. He was a Ferry Boat Captain in Long Island, and teacher before moving to the Northwest. When Mr. Myhre first came to PHS he was a substitute teacher, and was affectionately named, the “Singing Substitute.” Not only does he know his history, and how to relate well with kids, he is a talented jazz and pop singer. He auctions himself off every year at the PHS Booster Auction, and brings in a hefty donation. He enjoys teaching World and AP World history, visiting with his colleagues, music, grandkids and traveling. He will retire this June and begin a new chapter in his life that will involve traveling with his wife of 39 years, becoming a “Snowbird” and singing on stage again. He and his wife have two grown daughters and two grandchildren. We’ll miss you Mr. Myhre.
