PHS Students Donate to WSPCA Foundation |

On Friday, June 5, Kayleen Horkley and Deven Wilson were able to present their donation to the WSPCA Foundation. This donation was the culminating result of hours of fundraising activities that were part of their senior project. Kayleen and Deven held many bake sales at track meets this spring to raise money for a cause they both feel strongly about. The WSPCA (Washington State Police Canine Association) Foundation raises money to help provide medical care to retired K-9 officers in our state. As part of their senior project, Kayleen and Deven researched the need for extensive medical care for K-9 officers as they often wear their bodies down during their professional career. Unfortunately many police departments do not have funds to provide adequate care for the officers once they retire. Kayleen and Deven presented a check for $150 to Foundation President, Jon Munson and his K-9 partner, Fox. For more information about this worthwhile organization, or if you would like to do a similar project next year, contact Ms. Lyssand in the Counseling Center. |

We are happy to congratulate 23 dedicated PHS student volunteers who earned their varsity letter in Community Service through the United Way of Pierce County. At a reception hosted by the United Way on May 19, each award winner received a school letter, congratulations from Governor Gregoire, a Presidential Volunteer Service Award pin and letter from President Obama. Peninsula High School was the 4th highest award winner in Pierce County with these 23 volunteer winners.

Puget Sound ESD’s annual high school art competition encourages
students to share their work with other students in the PSESD
region and Washington State and emphasize the role of the arts
as a core subject area. The competition is open to students
enrolled in grades 9-12 in any public or state-approved private
school in the ESD region. Peninsula High School entered 4 pieces
of artwork at the regional level in February.
Puget Sound Regional Winners were selected based on accumulated
points in three categories (creativity, composition, and
technique) awarded by the judges participating this year. Seven
pieces advanced to the State Art Show in Olympia on April 18.
A batik by Heather LaPointe, a sophomore at Peninsula High
School, was one of the seven pieces that advanced to the State
level. On May 1, it was judged and selected as one of ten state
winners. Heather’s Batik will be on permanent display in the
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Building (old State
Capital Building) in Olympia. An award ceremony will take place
May 29, 2 PM in Olympia, where Heather will be presented a $200
purchase award, by Randy Dorn, Superintendent of Public
Instruction.

Scenario:
You are a reporter for a daily newspaper. Your assignment for
today is to write a six-paragraph story about a local radio
station (KGHP) that recently launched a new web site.
Your editor wants you to write this in hard-news fashion.
• Find your “nugget” and make sure it is prominent in the lead
paragraph.
• Make the lead intriguing and interesting…inviting the reader
to continue with the story.
• Write the remainder of the story in descending pyramid style.
Most important facts played closer to the top.
• Include at least one quote. The quote should be a stand-alone
paragraph.
Double-space your copy and make sure someone proofreads and
edits your story. It should be perfect.
Hint: For additional details for your article, don’t be afraid
to check out the site.

Student of the Week |
|
|
 |
|
 |
|
|
| |
Shanice Hrouda
Shanice is a very focused, dynamic, multi-faceted
individual. Shanice is that student who works to her own
amazingly-high standard without regard for peer pressure.
She is by nature very curious of all subjects. She’s always
willing to contribute in class with the highest regard and
respect for her classmates and teachers. This makes here a
terrific leader-by-example for students and an inspiration
to her teachers. Shanice is the complete student: curious,
responsible, involved, and highly intelligent. She will not
give up until the work is done and the concepts are mastered
-- and she has a great sense of humor to boot. She is simply
a joy to teach.
She belongs to many clubs and participates in a myriad of
activities. She has just been elected President of the Key
Peninsula Youth Council, and tries to come up with ways to
improve the lot of KP kids. On their behalf, she spoke at a
meeting of Pierce County Transit to protest cutting bus
service to the Key. She belongs to Life Savers, Speech &
Debate, Chinese clubs, as well as the Honor Society. She
volunteers her time at the Minter Salmon Hatchery and wants
to become a marine biologist.

Wendy Christiansen
Wendy Christiansen deserves a standing ovation! She
has been an inspiration to staff, students and our
community. She not only supports students in a very
successful and inclusive Employment Transition Training
Program (known as ETT II), she encourages students and staff
to reach for success in all areas of life. She guides people
to recognize their strengths and to capitalize on them. She
teaches people the power of self-empowerment through
community service and citizenship as well as skill
development. She has a dvised the Key Club, and Community
Inclusion Program as well as served on the district and
building diversity committee. With her encouragement and
leadership, we had 25 students earn community service
letters (145+ hours of service) through The United Way. She
has dedicated 30+ years of “building communities where
families and persons with disabilities come together with
friends, neighbors, community members to share resources and
supports.” Wendy is a true professional. She enjoys being
with her family, swimming, biking and running in her spare
time. Much of her spare time is spent with kids and families
in the community. Wendy is a PHS graduate and we are very
proud and pleased that she is here at PHS, where everyone is
valued as they are.

Donna Forbes
Donna Forbes has been working as a vocational
assistant in the Special Education program for the past 6
years. Her energy, commitment to youth, and positive
attitude makes her a joy to work with. Donna has a long
history with the Peninsula School District. She graduated in
1970, and has been working and volunteering in the PSD for
the past 18+ years. Donna has many gifts that she shares
with both students and staff. Her welcoming and gracious
personality helps build partnerships and creates an
environment where everyone works together to celebrate each
individuals strength. She is a hard worker, kind, outgoing,
and a strong advocate for youth. She is co-advisor of Key
Club, supports students to host the Community Inclusion
Auction, and attends many evening activities cheering for
the students she supports. Donna cares about each and every
student at PHS and she makes sure they know it! She has a
knack for finding a reason to celebrate individuals and
their successes. She was recently nominated for the "You
Make a Difference" State Award. Donna Forbes definitely
makes a difference at PHS. She has 4 children and 6
grandchildren, whom she adores and visits frequently. Donna
is the first person to encourage a struggling student,
celebrate an exchange student, or recognize the efforts of
our Key Club. Now it's time for us to give Donna a cheer...
We are glad you are a Seahawk!!!
