Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)

The PSAT is a test offered to sophomores and juniors in October of each year. It is used to determine participation in the National Merit Scholarship Program. It is useful as a practice for taking college admissions test, such as the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test and the American College Test. In addition, participation in the test gives a student access to the College Search, a program that gives the student information about colleges from all parts of the country.  There is a fee associated with this test.  It is offered once a year during October at Peninsula High School. College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Test (ACT)

Scores from either the SAT or ACT are accepted as part of the admissions application by all four-year colleges and universities in Washington State. Nationally, some schools designate one or the other, but many accept either test. Some colleges specify the SAT for eligibility. The SAT or ACT is mandatory for eligibility for NCAA intercollegiate athletics. Each test is administered several times during the year and may be taken more than once if desired. Tests may also be taken prior to the senior year. Online registration is preferred but registration materials are also available in the counseling department. Students need to register and pay for the SAT and ACT directly with the College Board & American Testing organizations.  The SAT and ACT tests are offered six or seven times during the school year at a variety of locations throughout the Puget Sound. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

The ASVAB is a broad-based test that measures student’s abilities in academic areas as well as those that are more vocationally oriented, i.e., electronics and electricity, clerical speed and skills, mechanical information, and spatial relations. While the test is provided and administered by the military, student scores are for personal and school use only and not utilized by the armed services without the student’s consent. The test is free, and all juniors are encouraged to participate. Study materials are available in the Career Center or for free practice tests visit:

ASSET/COMPASS

The ASSET and COMPASS tests are not “admissions” tests but rather tests that are designed to determine a student’s skill levels to assure proper placement in classes at community and technical schools. They test a student’s skill level in reading, English and math. They are administered by the college and there is a fee that ranges from $15 to $20. Study materials are available in the Career Center.
 
Financial Assistance is available for students who are on free and reduced lunches.
