What is an Academy?
The approximately 330 incoming freshmen are divided into 3 smaller Academies of about 110 students each. These students have the same core teachers in math, science, English and social studies. By reducing the number of interactions between students each day, students can focus on course work and be more prepared for rigor.
These smaller groups work together, develop stronger, supportive relationships, and challenge each other to be accountable for their actions. Building a smaller community of learners creates a positive environment where students are comfortable to take risks.
What will Academy teachers do?
We will meet regularly with each other about student progress, both academically and behaviorally. We will identify areas of concern for students and develop a plan of action to help each student. Stronger staff relationships will prevent kids from falling through the cracks, and will help us plan relevant interdisciplinary experiences for students.
We will communicate regularly with parents. Parents can expect information at regular intervals from the academy regarding the progress of their child, concerns that need addressing, as well as special praise.
Teachers will be available after school for additional help at an “Afterschool Special.” Students that seek additional help may come any time they want to practice skills, get more help on class work, work with groups, etc. Occasionally, we may assign students in danger of failing or those who don’t participate in class activities to Afterschool Special.
What do we want from students?
We want students to come prepared every day. This means all materials as well as open minds. We want students to do their best, take risks in class, and try things they’ve never tried before.
We want students to support and encourage each other as they work toward their individual goals.
What do we want from parents?
Primarily we want parents to remain involved with their kids. Many times kids get to high school and don’t want mom and dad around anymore, but this is all the more reason to remain focused on them! Ask about homework, activities and events that your child participates in. Contact teachers for questions. Refer to the school website for up-to-date information.
Next, we need up-to-date contact information in order to communicate with you effectively. E-mail is our preferred method for communication. Please be sure that your current e-mail, home phone and address are listed with the school.
We are excited for this new opportunity at Peninsula High School, and invite your comments and suggestions! |
